❓Isle of Man State Pension – Are you 43 this year or younger?
📉A recent actuarial review of the Isle of Man National Insurance fund states that the pot will be empty by 2048 without extra financing. So if you were born after 1980 there will be no state pension without a significant rethink by Government to balance the budget. The Treasury Minister said that ‘Efforts were underway to find a long-term solution’ however there is no plan at the moment so it is important to deal with reality.
✍️Financial Planning for retirement involves forecasting years in advance and using assumptions. A state pension forecast is always included in the planning model as an inflation linked guaranteed income and whilst it is unlikely to cover the cost of most peoples lifestyle it absolutely offers a strong foundation for retirement planning.
📈The current IOM Basic State Pension is £10,515 per annum. If a long term solution is not found and you had to fund this yourself you would need a pot of around c£235,000 to achieve the same guaranteed income, at the age of 68, linked to inflation.
⏳Lets assume you have been busy raising children and buying a property and haven’t formulated a plan for retirement yet.
💷To achieve a pot of c£235,000 you would need to make a contribution of c£610 per month until you reach 68. And remember this will provide you with an income of around c£10,500 per annum. Not a lot.
✅Please don’t underestimate the cost of retiring. It isn’t cheap but it is achievable if you have a plan.
